Something New
Worldwide campaign for Apple
—
Apple invited me to create a series of artworks celebrating the New Year. These pieces, alongside those of other visionary artists, will be showcased in Apple Stores worldwide, offering the public a glimpse into our artistic visions of the future. Emojis fascinate me—they are a new universal alphabet, instantly understood across cultures. They connect us through a shared, positive experience and are inseparable from our daily interaction with smartphones. In many ways, emojis are the new hieroglyphs, a contemporary Esperanto for our digital age.
Positivity is inside details Nowadays, the news is very grim; the media tells us about tragic events and nerve-racking predictions every day.
Our lives are ultra-connected and surrounded by information. The entire world knows, live, what is happening in every corner of the planet. Yesterday, the role of artists was to reveal what was hidden and to expose what was wrong. I believe that today, being a brave artist means giving people the keys to a positive vision of the world in order to counter gloom and negativity. One of these keys is to look around us attentively, because each day has something new to offer. One or many small details can brighten our day: a neighbor’s smile in the subway, a message from a loved one, a cat’s funny expression, the taste of a fruit, the green of a tree, the softness of a cloud in the sky…
So many beautiful and positive details surround us every day. We must keep our childlike gaze—curious, attentive, amazed—to truly see them. I try to see the world this way, staying alert to these moments as if they were the “emojis” of real life. They are my weapons against the darker side of our times For Apple’s “New Inspiration,” I propose a series of small objects embodying some of these everyday details. Vibrant and colorful, they translate into a realistic style the very emojis we use daily on our iPhones. Their purpose is to shift people’s perspective, showing them that beauty is everywhere and present every single day.
